Staging demonstrations and taking on all challengers, Maeda confirmed the devastating effectiveness of his art to a new continent. In addition to the United States, Maeda visited several Central and South American countries, arriving in Brazil in 1914. One of his most famous feats there was to handily defeat a much larger–and armed–capoeira master. Maeda’s fame and reputation grew steadily as jiu jitsu spread throughout Brazil…and acquired Brazilian characteristics.

Training: Intense Sparring

Three years after Maeda came to Brazil, he took on a new student, Carlos Gracie. Through diligent practice of techniques and intense sparring, Gracie grew into a grandmaster of the art, passing it on to his many–21 in all–children. Like Maeda, they proved the mettle of BJJ by taking on challengers and winning. As persons of notariety, prestige and means came to study the Gracie methods, more teachers and schools opened to meet the demand. The schools were organized and rules were standardized. In the early 1990s, Rorion Gracie pioneered the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the beginnings of mixed martial arts (MMA). From there, BJJ became an international obsession.
